Why do teeth get discolored?

There are several reasons why teeth may darken. These include:

  • Foods/drinks: Coffee, tea, colas, wines, and certain fruits and vegetables.
  • Tobacco use: Smoking or chewing tobacco can stain teeth.
  • Poor dental hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing to remove plaque and stain-producing substances like coffee and tobacco can cause tooth discoloration.
  • Disease: Several diseases that affect enamel (the hard surface of the teeth) and dentin (the underlying material under enamel) formation can lead to tooth discoloration. For example, amelogenesis imperfecta, dentin dysplasia. Head and neck radiation and chemotherapy can cause teeth discoloration. In addition, certain infections in pregnant mothers can cause tooth discoloration in the infant by affecting enamel development.
  • Medications: The antibiotics tetracycline and doxycycline are known to discolor teeth when given to children whose teeth are still developing (before the age of 8). Mouth rinses and washes containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride can also stain your teeth.
  • Dental materials: Some of the materials used in dentistry, such as amalgam restorations, especially silver sulfide-containing materials, can cast a gray-black color to your teeth.
  • Advancing age: As you age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets worn away revealing the natural yellow color of dentin. Also with aging, the tooth lays down more dentin, which decreases the size of the pulp. This reduces the translucency of the tooth, which makes for a darker appearance.
  • Environment: Excessive fluoride either from environmental sources (naturally high fluoride levels in water) or from excessive use (fluoride applications, rinses, toothpaste, and fluoride supplements taken by mouth) can cause teeth discoloration.
  • Trauma: For example, damage from a fall can disturb enamel formation in young children whose teeth are still developing. Trauma can also cause discoloration to adult teeth.

The treatment options depends upon the amount and type of discoloration.

Some stains are :

  • 1) Extrinsic
  • 2) while others are intrinsic.

For extrinsic stains, teeth whitening procedure can get you back white bright pearly smile. There are two types of bleaching procedure- In-Office bleaching- done by our cosmetic expert at Ekdantam dental clinic, making use of LASER and higher concentration of bleaching agent under all precautions gets you faster, predictable and safer result. The other type is At-home Bleaching, You can walk down to Ekdantam dental clinic and professionals here will help you getting made your customized bleaching tray and provide you with all instructions and safety protocols.

We suggest two in-office appointment followed by at home bleaching to get longer and stable result.

Another treatment option for stubborn stains are microabrasion and macroabrasion. Book an appointment with us to know which is best and least invasive procedure in your case which suits your budget too.

For Intrinsic stains, using teeth whitening procedure cannot get you desired result.

Dental bonding or Porcelain Veneers are more viable options. Intrinsic stains cannot be removed, they can only be masked. A superficial layer of tooth is removed for porcelain veneer and impression are made to sent to dental lab to make CAD-CAM guided natural looking veneers, which can be pasted on front surface of your tooth in next appointment.  For quick result, composite veneers can be done in single sitting of the treatment as they can be directly fabricated and bonded over the prepared teeth surfaces in dental office, thereby skipping the lab work. We never suggest our patients to go for full crowns as treatment of discoloration as it is very invasive procedure requiring gross removal of the tooth structure causing sensitivity and root canal therapy and gum diseases in future.
