Gaps between the teeth are very common in adults, about 30% of people have dark spaces between their teeth. This could be due to genetic factor or thumb-sucking habit during childhood or also due to gum diseases.
It’s very common for people to say, the gap was not there when I was young but now its increasing gradually. This happens due to tooth movement because of periodontal disease (pyorrhea).(Known as Pathological Migration ).
While most gaps begin to form in childhood, gum disease can cause problems at any age.
Sometimes irregular shapes or small size of teeth also causes gaps for example peg shaped laterals. These also can be corrected by treatment below.
( Below is a case which has a small Right lateral Incisor and after composite Build up in second image , without any tooth preparation . )
The gaps can be fixed cosmetically through the use of dental bonding (composites- tooth colored material). In this procedure, the resin material is applied in such a way that the proportion, color, shape and size blends smoothly with rest of the teeth.
The second treatment option for filling gaps is Dental veneers which are porcelain or ceramic shells which fit over existing teeth but may require removing some tooth enamel (0.2-0.5mm). Ultra-thin versions don’t require enamel removal, but they cost more.
We use both porcelain and composite veneers at Ekdantam. The type of Veneers we will use for the treatment depends upon the condition and spaces of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant & are stronger and durable than composite veneers.
Bigger gaps require Partial braces and retainers. Sometimes low frenal attachment causes tooth to separate. A frenectomy is required along with gap closure techniques to prevent the gap to occur again.
